data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">This is&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">p<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">art one of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">a<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;two-part&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">blog,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;illustrating use of Talking Mats in a teaching context.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">For several of my students&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">(young adults aged 16-25 with special educational needs and disabilities)&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">the focus of our therapy work is Relationships<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;and Sex Education<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">.&nbsp; They\u2019ve worked with me through Mental Capacity Assessments, the result of which indicate that they require further education and support to build their capacity to make decisions in relation to sexual relations.<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp; All of the<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">young adults&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">I work with have&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">significant&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">speech, language and communication needs.&nbsp; As their Speech and Language Therapist it\u2019s my duty to ensure that I work with them to enhance their understanding of the linguistic and pragmatic concepts which underpin&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">their<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;understanding of sex and relationships.&nbsp; As the Department for Education state in their latest RSE statutory guidance \u2018t<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">o embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life, pupils need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">According to case law (<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">D Borough Council v AB [2011] EWHC 101<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">) there are key factors an individual must understand to have capacity to sexual relations.&nbsp; These are:<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">The mechanics of the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">act;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">That there are health risks involved, particularly the acquisition of sexually transmitted and sexually transmissible&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">infections<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">;<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">That sex between a man and a woman may result in the woman becoming pregnant.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">This was added to recently in&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">A Local Authority v JB [2020] EWCA&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">Civ<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;735<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;where Lord Justice Baker included the fact that the other person must have the capacity to consent to the sexual activity and must in fact consent before and throughout the sexual activity.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">My&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">talking mat activities give me an opportunity to assess&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">student\u2019s&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">self-awareness, an important consideration for mental capacity work when the law expects a person to be able to use knowledge and weigh it up to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">make a decision<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;Without the Talking mats&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">structure,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">the responses are often \u2018I don\u2019t know\u2019 or I\u2019m offered a learned response<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">, e.g., \u2018to keep safe\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">The<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;case study examples below demonstrate<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;poor self-awareness, because when combined with further assessment&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">explor<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">e<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;their understanding of key vocabulary and concepts&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">it is evident that the young adult<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;do<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">not understand many of the terms used within these different&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">sexual and social situations<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">.<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">When working with talking mats it\u2019s important to remember that you\u2019re giving control to the \u2018thinker\u2019, it is their mat and therefore where or how they place visuals is their choice and part of the trust building exercise between&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">\u2018thinker\u2019 and \u2018listener\u2019.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">Young Adult A&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">They expressed through their talking mat that they know how to keep themselves safe in various social and sexual situation<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">s<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">, however upon further assessment<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">, including follow on mats&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">they did not understand many words and concepts used<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;within this context<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">e.g., \u2018hook-up\u2019, \u2018one night stand\u2019, \u2018morning after pill\u2019 and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">were unable&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">to offer examples of sexually transmitted diseases<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;when offered visual choices on their mat<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">Young Adult&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">B&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">Th<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">is young adult<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;expressed that they understood how to keep themselves safe from sexually transmitted diseases and to manage their own and others privacy, however, upon further assessment it became clear that they did not understand the word \u2018safe\u2019.&nbsp; Understanding this&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">concept<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">is necessary<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;for us to manage<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;the majority of sexual and social interactions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">Therefore, this talking mat helped to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">pave the way for our ongoing&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">therapy work&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">with the young adult.<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span facilitated a conversation with the young adult who&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">explain<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">ed<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;how they sometimes find it difficult to keep themselves and others safe, specifically when they are struggling to manage their mental health.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">It acted as a starting point,<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;allowed us to explore skills&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">necessary to manage executive functions,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">e.g.<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;planning, controlling our impulses and sequencing events.&nbsp; Again, it enabled us to consider what we would add into the therapy programme and how we would work with other key people involved in the young adult\u2019s life<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal (Web)\">&nbsp;to keep them and others safe<\/span><span data-ccp-parastyle=\"Normal
