The funding to create this resource has been awarded by the Communication Trust from the Communication Consortium Grants Programm<em>e &#8211; funded by The Rayners Special Educational Trust.<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Communication Trust Consortium, a coalition of over 35 not-for-profit organisations, is hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/ican.org.uk\/i-cans-talking-point\/professionals\/tct-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ICAN<\/a>. They harness collective expertise to support the workforce and commissioners to support all children and young people\u2019s speech, language, and communication skills across the UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This exciting year-long project will be led by Laura Holmes, our Lead Associate for Children and Young People. Laura has been part of the Talking Mats Team since 2016 and has over 20 years\u2019 experience of working as a Speech and Language Therapist with children and young people, across a wide variety of settings in both NHS and independent sectors.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"239\" height=\"239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image.jpg 239w, https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-192x192.jpg 192w, https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><figcaption>Laura Holmes: Lead Associate for Children and Young People<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>New Sensory Resource<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project will develop, pilot and launch a Talking Mats visual communication resource to tune into a child\u2019s view of their sensory needs. It will enable children and young people who have speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN) and sensory difficulties to have a voice in their therapy assessment, planning and intervention.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSensory integration\u201d and \u201csensory processing\u201d refer to the processes in the brain that allow us to take the signals from our senses, make sense of those signals and respond appropriately.\u202f Children and young people with sensory processing\/integration difficulties often have speech, language and communication difficulties, which may be linked to a diagnosis of autism <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27475418\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Green et al 2016<\/a>); developmental language disorder (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/1034912X.2020.1740186\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simpson et al 2020<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/1034912X.2020.1740186);\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">);<\/a> hearing impairment (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32521420\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alkhamra et al 2020<\/a>); or a history of trauma (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/0164212X.2016.1265475?src=recsys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fraser et al 2017<\/a>).\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This work is important as sensory assessments can typically involve a mixture of formal and informal questionnaires and checklists which are carried out with Parents\/Carers, Education Staff, and may also involve observations of the child in their environment.
