{"id":8409,"date":"2019-04-12T15:19:36","date_gmt":"2019-04-12T15:19:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/?p=8409"},"modified":"2019-04-12T15:19:36","modified_gmt":"2019-04-12T15:19:36","slug":"placements-reportingoutcomes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/placements-reportingoutcomes\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing Placements &#8211; Reporting Outcomes with Talking Mats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many thanks to Tina Wood, Occupational Therapist at Therapy In Motion, for this great example of how Talking Mats can be used to explore thoughts and feelings both in present-day and in retrospect, to evidence positive outcomes from a change in educational placement. Tina\u2019s use of colour coding and pie charts really helps to illustrate this.<\/p>\n<p>Tina attended our Talking Mats Foundation training back in September 2016 and since then she has been using Talking Mats regularly in her work as an Independent Occupational Therapist.<\/p>\n<p>In this example, Tina has used Talking Mats to enable Ben (name changed for anonymity, age 12\u00bd years) to share his thoughts and feelings using the Talking Mats \u2018Consulting Children and Young People\u2019 resource packs \u2013 focusing on the topics \u2018My Body and Skills\u2019 and \u2018What I do and Support\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of this Talking Mat, Ben had been accessing a new placement at a Pupil Referral Unit for the past 11 months (click on the picture below to see a clearer version).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/TW-Blog-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-8417 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/TW-Blog-1-300x174.png\" alt=\"TW Blog 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As there was clearly a difference in how Ben felt things were going when he was attending his previous school, Tina decided to ask him to do a retrospective Talking Mat of how things were going for him 11 months ago in January 2018, when he started to feel \u201cunwell\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This enabled comparison with how he feels now in the \u201csafe setting\u201d of the Pupil Referral unit (click on picture to see a clearer version).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/TW-Blog-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-8419 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/TW-Blog-2-300x187.png\" alt=\"TW Blog 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: windowtext; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'; font-size: 11pt;\">Tina then compiled the information from the above tables into pie charts, enabling a clear visual comparison between the two times\/situations (click on picture to see a clearer version):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Pie-Charts-2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Pie-Charts-2-300x174.png\" alt=\"Pie Charts 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As can be seen from these charts, there had been a huge change in Ben\u2019s perception of how he is coping with life in general and school in particular.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tina recommended that this information needs to be considered along with the rest of Ben\u2019s sensory needs (as reported in her full OT report) when deciding on what is the best educational setting for him after leaving the pupil referral unit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We love this use of colour coding and pie charts to illustrate the information from Ben\u2019s Talking Mats &#8211; to really ensure that Ben\u2019s feelings and thoughts are seen and heard.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0If you would like to know more about accessing Talking Mats training \u2013 available across the UK and Ireland as well as online \u2013 please take a look here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/training\/\">https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/training\/<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0If you have any examples of how you report\/share information about completed Talking Mats we would be interested to hear about it!
