{"id":9427,"date":"2020-06-16T12:21:38","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T11:21:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/?p=9427"},"modified":"2020-06-16T12:21:38","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T11:21:38","slug":"youth-justice-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/youth-justice-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Youth Justice Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0Youth Justice Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How can Talking Mats be used in youth justice research?\u00a0 I am a clinical psychology doctoral student at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.\u00a0 My doctoral research is an evaluation of communication assistance in our youth justice system.\u00a0 Communication assistance is New Zealand\u2019s version of the England and Wales intermediary scheme.\u00a0 I used a Talking Mat framework to help understand young people\u2019s experiences of working with a communication assistant.<\/p>\n<p>I first learnt about Talking Mats in 2017 when I attended a workshop on enabling effective communication with children and young people run by Talking Trouble Aotearoa New Zealand (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkingtroublenz.org\">www.talkingtroublenz.org<\/a>).\u00a0 I have since attended Talking Mats training in New Zealand and have regularly used Talking Mats in my previous work as an intern psychologist at a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.\u00a0 I have found them to be an effective way for children and young people to express themselves.\u00a0 They have been especially helpful for young people with whom I am struggling to build rapport, and who only give the odd shrug, nod or head shake to questions asked.\u00a0 I also like the additional information that comes from how the young person places the cards.\u00a0 I remember one teenager boy, for example, who threw down \u201cteacher\u201d and \u201cschool\u201d under \u201cthings not going well\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In my doctoral research, I was interested to know what tools or strategies used by communication assistants were helpful or unhelpful.\u00a0 I created 17 picture cards of resources commonly used by communication assistants, such as a laptop, post-it notes and a stress ball.\u00a0 The young person was able to sort these cards into piles, \u201cYes\u201d, \u201cDon\u2019t Know\u201d or \u201cNo\u201d to indicate which ones had been used in their youth justice process(es).\u00a0 The young person then sorted the \u201cYes\u201d pile under three top cards or headings, \u201cHelpful\u201d, \u201cDon\u2019t Know\u201d and \u201cUnhelpful\u201d.\u00a0 This second Talking Mat was then a starting point for further conversation and some simple off \u201coff the mat\u201d questions.<\/p>\n<p>Again, in my research, the Talking Mats framework provided a way for young people with communication difficulties to let me know their opinion.\u00a0 It helped me to build rapport with young people I had not met before and it took some of the intensity out of the interaction by giving us a shared point of focus.\u00a0 I really appreciated being able to hear young people\u2019s thoughts on communication assistance and the Talking Mats framework (as well as some other visual aids and strategies) allowed this to happen.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about this research and the findings on my website <a href=\"https:\/\/kellyhoward2.wixsite.com\/youthjustice\">https:\/\/kellyhoward2.wixsite.com\/youthjustice<\/a> or in a recent article in the <em>Youth Justice <\/em>journal, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/1473225420923763\">https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/1473225420923763<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Kelly Howard for writing this blog about her interesting research .
