{"id":9552,"date":"2020-09-03T15:32:50","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T14:32:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/?p=9552"},"modified":"2020-09-03T15:32:50","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T14:32:50","slug":"covid19_securehospitalsetting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/covid19_securehospitalsetting\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid 19 Experiences &#8211; Using Talking Mats  in a Secure Hospital Setting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a group of Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) working in a secure hospital we recently embarked on a mini project <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">using Talking Mats <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to check in with our service users with learning disabi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lities <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ovid-19. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> collated the evidence from our respect<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ive professional bodies (Royal College of O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ccupatio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nal Therapy, Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy, Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and British D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ietetic <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ssociation) in terms of changes that people <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">might experience if they\u2019d had Covid<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-19 and produced a talking mat around these.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t quickly dawned on us that we might be on to something here, and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> creating an opportunity to \u2018check in\u2019 more broadly with our service users <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">would serve a useful purpose, so we <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">added some <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">additional <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">categories around changes to routine, psychological wellbeing and feeling safe.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This was my <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">colleagues\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> first experience of using talking mats, and their faces when I turned up clutching my 99p a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ctual doormat were a picture! I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> introduced them to the theory behind the mat and its presentation and harped on about the benefits in terms of attention, comprehension, non-threatening interaction, initiation and structuring <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">narrative; they nodded supportively.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We set off across our learning disability wards in multi-disciplinary pairs and all but a few of the service users agreed to have a chat with us. My colleagues<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> commented that they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> were pleasantly surprised by the engagement and the amount and novelty of the information gained; we\u00a0 identified things that the service users hadn\u2019t told anyone because they hadn\u2019t been asked that question!\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/JB-Blog-Photo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9556\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talkingmats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/JB-Blog-Photo.jpg\" alt=\"JB Blog Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In talking to others we were asked why weren\u2019t rolling this out in a partner secure hospital for people with mental health conditions? \u2018no reason really, we just haven\u2019t got there yet\u2019 we answered. Then came the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2026. but we can just do it like a questionnaire with them. This<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> question<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> wasn\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and in my experience isn\u2019t ever ill meant. It comes from a place of naivety in relation to the presence of communication difficulties in people with mental health conditions and because of that, lack of exposure to different professional groups such as Speech and Language Therapy and the skills and approaches we have to offer. Skills in gaining and holding someone\u2019s attention. Skills in decreasing pressure in communication situations. Skills in enabling time, space and ways in which people can initiate their thoughts.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) working around the project has enabled me to show others how talking mats can support their practice.
